I remember seeing my first brown leather chaise lounge while visiting an old aunt. It was a good few years back in my youth but that image has stayed with me over all these years. What was it? Why was it there? And what was its use were only a few questions I remember asking my Mum. I’m certain there must have been a lot more.
This thing intrigued me and when nobody was around my younger brother used to sit on the back of it acting like he was on a horse. Well how was he supposed to know what it really was? I was in the horrors waiting for someone to come into the room while he was in full gallop.
The room it was in was sparsely furnished and there was a pile of old toys in a corner which belonged to the aunts now grown up children. The toys had been kept there all those years for any other children visiting, such as ourselves. Even though from a different generation.
When my mother explained that a chaise is used for relaxing I don’t know how I kept my laughter in. All I could visualize was my brother being Hopalong Cassidy on this funny looking, stumpy backed seat.
Nowadays I fully understand more about them and their use. And believe me I also understand the benefits of being able to relax on one of them. Especially after some of the more strenuous times while bringing up our own family. Slumping onto one would be shear heaven. Providing my brother wasn’t around.
